Big Drum Small World

By Barbara Y., Parent of Surfin’ Second Grader Austin and Talented Toucan Isabelle

This month I went on a field trip to Villa Montalvo with my son’s Surfin’ Second Graders class. We saw “Big Drum Small World.” It was a great introduction to jazz music that was understandable and enjoyable for the kids. It was an interactive performance where the kids got to clap along with the songs, count the beat, and even scat.

There was also a multicultural component where five different famous jazz musicians were introduced and we listened to their original songs. They had fun titles like “Crab Cakes” and “Awadjidje.” If you have a little trouble pronouncing the latter, ask a second grader and they’d be happy to help you out.
